Proposals on limiting the turnover of polyethylene bags submitted to Cabinet of Ministers

"Action Plan on the reduction of the environmental impact of plastic package waste in the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2019-2020 is implemented", said the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev at a press conference held at the headquarters of the New Azerbaijan Party (NAP), APA reports.

According to the Minister, steps are being taken to gradually restrict the usage of commonly used plastic bags and to expand the usage of alternative materials: "Agreeing with the relevant authorities proposals on limiting the turnover of lightweight polyethylene bags in Azerbaijan have been submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers. And the draft document on the making the 15-50 microns of polyethylene bags paid is in the process of approval".

The Minister also commented on the issue of facilities that spreads bad odors. He noted that the ministry wants such facilities to function properly more than harsh penalties: "There are basically two metal-smelting facilities in Sumgayit that spread bad odors. The Sumgayit polygon is a source of air pollution that bothers us. The local executive bodies here have a great responsibility. The retail situation results in such cases. People who work in small facilities should set up their work properly, rather than paying fines. Therefore, fines, sanctions, mandatory instructions, informing and the installation of cleansing equipment must be properly established. We can prevent huge fines and eliminate public dissatisfaction".
