Russia has officially withdrawn from the European Convention against Torture, APA's Moscow bureau reports.

Russia's withdrawal from the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture, announced in September 2025, came into effect on November 1.

Note that the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, ratified by the 46 current member states of the Council of Europe, aims to protect prisoners from potential violence and, in particular, provides for prison monitoring.

On September 29, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law adopted by parliament that accused the Council of Europe of "discrimination" against Russia and formalized the country's withdrawal from the European Convention against Torture.
