A proposal has been made to establish a bone marrow donor bank in Azerbaijan, APA reports.

The proposal was voiced by MP Soltan Mammadov during the discussion of the draft law "On the Execution of the State Budget of the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2025" at today's plenary session of the Milli Majlis.

Soltan Mammadov noted that the successful implementation of the compulsory health insurance system in the healthcare sector, which is one of the priority areas of Azerbaijan's socially oriented state policy, is yielding positive results:

“In this regard, I would like to emphasize several issues. The continuous expansion of the service package within the compulsory health insurance system, increasing public access to medical services, and improving the quality of healthcare services provided are important matters. At the same time, special importance should be attached to expanding preventive measures and strengthening the primary healthcare system. It should be noted that in both developed and developing countries, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, spending in both of these areas has increased significantly. In the countries of the European region, expenditures on primary healthcare services account for an average of 15–20 percent of total healthcare spending, while funds allocated to preventive measures account for 3–7 percent. Increasing expenditures on preventive measures and the primary healthcare system serves to optimize overall healthcare costs and prevent excessive pressure on the healthcare system. In this regard, I believe there is a need to further deepen reforms in this direction in the future.”

The MP pointed out that the allocation of AZN 5 million for the implementation of bone marrow transplantation operations under the healthcare expenditures section of the 2025 state budget execution report is highly commendable:

“Today, children suffering from hereditary blood diseases are in great need of this support. In recent years, alongside the implementation of bone marrow transplantation operations abroad, several measures have also been taken to carry out these procedures within the country. The performance of such operations in both public and private medical institutions is commendable. At the same time, there is a need to expand human resources capacity, establish a bone marrow donor bank, and thereby eliminate the limitation of domestic operations being conducted only with first-degree relative donors. In addition, considering the positive outcomes of state programs successfully implemented in the healthcare sector over the years, I believe it is important to continue efforts to allocate additional financial resources for the treatment of hereditary and rare childhood diseases.”
