Azerbaijan plans to supply 80,000 hectares in liberated territories with irrigation water

The expansion of the use of modern irrigation technologies is one of the main goals of the “State Program for 2026–2030 on the Production and Processing of Agricultural, Fisheries and Aquaculture Products” approved by the President, Deputy Chairman of the Azerbaijan Amelioration and Water Management OJSC Rafiq Aslanov said at a regional meeting held in Zangilan, APA's Karabakh bureau reports.

He provided information on ongoing and planned amelioration and water management projects in the liberated territories.

According to him, Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur possess approximately 2 billion cubic meters of water resources, and these resources are of great importance for realizing the region’s agricultural potential.

The deputy chairman noted that the restoration of the Sugovushan, Khachinchay, Kondalanchay-1, Kondalanchay-2 and Lower Kondalanchay reservoirs has created opportunities for irrigating more than 110,000 hectares of land. At the same time, the commissioning of the Zabukhchay reservoir and the main pipeline has improved water supply for more than 12,000 hectares of agricultural land in the Gubadli and Zangilan districts.

Rafiq Aslanov said that projects related to the Sarsang and Bargushadchay reservoirs are currently being implemented, while construction of the Hakarichay reservoir is planned to begin. The construction of the Giz Galasi main canal will make it possible to irrigate 12,000 hectares in the Fuzuli and Jabrayil districts and improve water supply in districts along the Araz River.

According to him, the prepared projects envisage supplying irrigation water to nearly 80,000 hectares of land in the districts of Aghdam, Fuzuli, Jabrayil, Zangilan, Gubadli, Lachin and Kalbajar.

Rafiq Aslanov emphasized that in order to ensure the efficient use of water resources, the application of modern irrigation technologies such as drip and pivot systems should be expanded, and crop patterns should be shaped in accordance with available water resources.
