Azerbaijan performs first-ever simultaneous cardiovascular surgery and kidney transplant-UPDATED

“A patient suffering from kidney failure had applied to the Central Clinic Hospital for a transplant. During examinations, a large abdominal aortic aneurysm was also detected, and for this reason the patient needed surgery,” Professor Kamran Musayev, PhD in Medicine, told APA.

“When we conducted more in-depth examinations, it became clear that the patient also had blockages in the heart arteries. After holding an extensive medical consultation, we determined our treatment strategy as follows: first, a coronary artery bypass operation was performed — that is, open-heart surgery — and the heart vessels were replaced. One month later, in the same session, both the grafting of the abdominal aortic aneurysm and the kidney transplant surgery were carried out. We discharged the patient, who underwent these operations within a month, in good condition in recent days. That is why we are all very proud,” he said.

First-ever double transplant in a single operation in Azerbaijan

For the first time in Azerbaijan, a patient has undergone cardiovascular and kidney transplantation during the same surgical procedure, APA reports.

The operation was performed at the Central Clinic Hospital.

Doctors who performed the operation

The surgery was carried out by Central Clinic doctors, cardiologist, PhD in Medicine, Professor Kamran Musayev, and transplant specialist Tariyel Nadirov.

The patient’s initial visit, and identified problems

In a statement to APA, Tariyel Nadirov said that the person who underwent a complex operation at the Central Clinic Hospital in recent days is 65 years old: “When the patient came to us for a kidney transplant, examinations revealed a severe narrowing in the heart vessels and an aneurysm, meaning dilation, in the aorta.”

Cardiovascular surgery at the initial stage

Taking these factors into account, the patient’s cardiovascular surgery was discussed first. Doctor Kamran Musayev performed an aortocoronary bypass surgery on the patient (a procedure in which arteries taken from the chest and arm or veins taken from the legs are connected like a bridge to the blocked coronary artery of the heart in order to restore blood flow to the heart – ed.). The operation was successfully completed, and after the surgery, the patient was again placed under the supervision of a nephrologist and a cardiologist.”

Two procedures during the same operation

The transplant specialist noted that two months later, the patient underwent two surgeries at the same time: “First, Doctor Kamran Musayev performed surgery to eliminate the aortic aneurysm and replace the aorta with an artificial graft. Then, I transplanted a kidney donated by the patient’s spouse onto this artificial graft. I would like to note that the transplanted kidney had two arteries, and both arteries were separately anastomosed to this artificial graft. The vein was anastomosed to the inferior vena cava. Urine output from the transplanted kidney began on the operating table.”

Post-operative condition

“One week has now passed since the operation. The patient’s condition and creatinine levels are completely normal. Today, we were able to discharge the patient home after providing the necessary recommendations.”
