ANAS President: Azerbaijani orthoepic dictionary may be published by the end of the year

Work is underway on the preparation of an orthoepic dictionary of the Azerbaijani language, said President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), academician Isa Habibbeyli, during his speech at the conference titled “The Language of the Media in the Context of Scientific Discussion,” APA reports.

“There was a need to revise the dictionary. Work is currently ongoing in this direction. It is expected that the dictionary will be published by the end of 2026,” Isa Habibbeyli said.

The ANAS president also noted that issues related to personal names should be reconsidered: “New words must be created in the Azerbaijani language, and equivalents for international terms must be found. The instructions put forward at the state level regarding the language are an expression of promoting the statehood ideology of independent Azerbaijan, enriching our language, and showing care for it. Among the provisions put forward by MR. President regarding the preservation of the Azerbaijani language are issues related to international terminology. As the President noted, the solution to the problem lies in using international terminology alongside finding Azerbaijani equivalents for other terms and expanding national terminology. New words must be created in the Azerbaijani language, and equivalents for international terms must be found.”

Isa Habibbeyli noted that one of the ways to enrich the language through its internal resources is word formation: “One of the ways words are created is through literature. For example, words such as chimerlik (beach), nefeslik (vent), and dunyadash (contemporary) entered the Azerbaijani language from literary works.”
