Columned palace found out during excavations in Sharur region

Nakhchivan. Gurbanoghlu-APA. Azerbaijan-US expedition group found out a columned palace (length - 35m, width - 28m) in Sharur, Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Vali Bakhshaliyev, officer of Nakhchivan branch of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) told APA’s Nakhchivan bureau that scientific researches done by the officers of Nakhchivan branch along with the research group of University of Georgia, excavations carried out in Oghlangala territory of Sharur region prove that Nakhchivan was one of the places of early civilization. The academician said that dwelling places were established in the 1st millennium BC, castle walls had been built beginning from that period. Bakhshaliyev said the developed period of the castle dated back to the 8-7th centuries BC.
“Excavations are being carried out in a part of the palace. Ceramics, coal, home appliances, household faience were found during the excavations. A piece of household faience with cuneiform on it paves the way for new researches,” he said.
The academician also added that it was planned to finish the archeological excavations in September. Examples of material culture will be presented to the museums after the researches are over.
This is the second archeological excavation carried out by the US-Azerbaijan joint expedition group in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. The research group of University of Georgia headed by Lauren Ristvet first visited Nakhchivan in 2006 and did research work along with the scientists of History Institute, Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography of Nakhchivan branch of ANAS on the second Kultere and the first Makhta archeological monuments dating back to the 4th – 3rd centuries BC.
