Half of world’s population at risk of malaria

Baku. Sevil Zeynalgizi – APA. 3.3 billion people in the world are at risk of malaria. Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Azerbaijan told APA that in 2010, there were about 216 million malaria cases and an estimated 655 000 malaria deaths. 81% of the malaria cases, 91% of malaria deaths occurred in the African region. Compared to 2000, malaria cases reduced by 17%, malaria deaths by 26% in 2010.

According to the WHO, 8 malaria cases (4 locally-acquired malaria cases, 4 overseas-acquired malaria cases) were recorded in Azerbaijan in 2011. According to the organization, the malaria situation began to deteriorate in Azerbaijan at the beginning of the 1990s. The epidemic reached its peak in 1996. The number of malaria cases reached 13 135. As a result of large-scale epidemic control interventions, the malaria situation in the country improved.

April 25 is the World Malaria Day. National Strategy and Action Plan on Elimination of Malaria for 2008-2013 was adopted in Azerbaijan in 2008.
