Press service of the Ministry told APA that the works on measurement of thickness of snow were carried out in 16 routes in Great Caucasus, 7 routes in Small Caucasus and 5 routes in Nakchivan Autonomous Republic.

The measurement works revealed that the snow cover in the basins of high-mountain rivers of the Small Caucasus is not so great. But it exceeds the multiyear norms, snow and water reserves in the basins of high-mountain rivers of the Great Caucasus exceed the multiyear norms, as well as norms of 2011.

The department carried out an expedition for the purpose of determination of snow and water reserves in the republic, as well as prepared the forecast of events due to the spring-autumn flood and spates in the rivers of the republic.

It is expected that the water flow from Kur river to Mingecheveir water basin will be 108-126%, from Ganikh river to Mingechevir water basin – 124-158%, from Araz river to Araz water basin – 101-121%. It is expected that the water content in the rivers of south-west side of Great Caucasus (Balaken-Sheki) will be 125-165%, in the rivers of north-west side (Guba-Khachmaz) – 100-120%, in the rivers of Small Caucasus (Dashkasan-Gedabey) – 100-110%, in the reivers of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic – 105-115%, in the rivers of Lankaran-Astara region – 90-100%.

In the period of highest stream flow, especially in April and May, rising of temperature and melting of snow in the mountainous areas, as well as heavy rains will cause floods and streams in the rivers of the south-west slope of the Great Caucasus (Balakanchay, Kishchay, Shinchay, Talachay, Kurmukchay, Goychay, Girdimanchay, Aghsuchay), north-west slope (Gusarchay, Gudyalchay, Velvelechay, Garachay), Small Caucasus (Gandjachay, Kurakchay, Zayamchay, Shamkirchay, Goshgarchay), Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (Nakhchivanchay, Cahrichay, Gilanchay, Alinjachay) and Lankaran-Astara region (Lankaranchay, Vilashchay, Vasharurchay, Astarachay).

According to the forecasts of the National Hydrometeorology Department, rising of temperature in April above normal and melting of snow in the south-west areas of the Great Caucasus, intensive rainfalls in some days cause to rise of water levels in lower reach of Kur and floods in April and May.
