Old landslide area in Azerbaijanâ€™s capital becomes active

APA reports that the landslide processes are located between buildings #11, 11 a, 11 b and 13.

Chief engineer of Complex Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology Expedition of the Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry Shaig Niftiyev told APA that increase of atmospheric precipitation in the recent months intensified the subsidence of rocks in that area, caused fractures along the old landslide area. The width of the fracture in some areas is 20-40cm, in other areas 4-5cm. The visible depth of the fracture is 10-30cm, in some places 50cm.

Niftiyev said another fracture is observed in the lower part of the slope.
Shaig Niftiyev said there is a need to take urgent measures.
â€œThe next activation of the landslide must be prevented. The garden plots on the top of the landslide area, illegal constructions, water lines must be removed, the fractures must be filled with clay,â€ he said.

Chief engineer said the landslide processes started in that area in 1987. The first landslide occurred on February 13, 1988.
