Greece’s University of Patras starts new anti-tuberculosis project in Sheki

Baku. Lachin Sultanova – APA. The University of Patras of Greece started the new project in the Pulmonary Diseases Center in Sheki Region of Azerbaijan, project manager Dr. Nikolaos Lazaru said at a press conference on Friday, APA reports. He said the aim of the project is the reduction in the incidence of tuberculosis, with an upgrade of health hygiene structure in the region of Sheki. This will be achieved by supporting the national project for tuberculosis control that is realized in collaboration with the World Health Organization. A direct impact of the project will be obvious among the 600 patients with active tuberculosis in the region. “The main goals of the project are supporting the health care personnel of the region for the follow-up of outpatients that receive anti-tuberculosis therapy, collection of adequate clinical specimens under the best conditions for the isolation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis as well as identification of new cases. The government of Greece allocated 60 000 euro for implementation of this project. It is not a final figure and it can be increased depending of our work”. A group of medical doctors from Greece, who have been on a visit to Azerbaijan since June 14, will return home on June 21 and two months later the doctors will visit Azerbaijan again to see the implementation of the project.
