Baku. Kamala Guliyeva – APA. Baku hosts the 7th International Conference “Bioethics, Human Rights and New Technologies: legal and ethical aspects of reproductive health and family planning” organized by Azerbaijani Human Rights Commissioner with the support of UNESCO in the framework of the celebration of the National Human Rights Day in Azerbaijan (18 June) and 60th anniversary of the Council of Europe, APA reports. The conference will last for three days. Making a keynote speech at the conference, Human Rights Commissioner Elmira Suleymanova said the term “bioethics” appeared in 1971. Suleymanova said much work had been done recently for protection of reproductive health in the country, the Human Rights Commissioner’s Office was carrying out activities in the regions to protect mothers and babies, activities concerning medical and moral aspects of reproductive health. She said the parliament discussed the bill on “Reproductive health and family planning”, but the attitude towards the document was not unambiguous. The aim of the conference is to raise awareness concerning reproductive health and bioethics.

UN Resident Coordinator Bruno Pouezat said UNESCO prepared rules on bioethics in 2001.
“Protection of reproductive health is a reality for most countries. Reproductive health has improved in many countries, including Azerbaijan. But these rights are still violated in most countries. I hope the conference will give impetus to the development of reproductive health and bioethics,” he said.
