Baku. Ilhama Isabalayeva – APA. “The impact of the global economic crisis on Azerbaijan’s labor market is not felt yet”, said Deputy Chief of the Employment Office of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of Population Shahbaz Khalafov told APA.
He said there were no serious differences between the current and last year indications. “If there is serious unemployment, 200-300 thousand people would be registered at the employment agencies as it was early 1990s. There were more than 9 000 jobseekers registered in the employment agencies over the past three months. This figure was 10 000 last year. There were 10-11 thousand vacant job places in Azerbaijan in January-March, 2008, but it was 9-10 thousand this year. The economic crisis is not felt in the number of vacant job places, employment and applications to the employment agencies”.

Khalafov said nearly 60 thousand people expected to apply the employment agencies this year and the number of unemployed people was forecasted to be 8-9 thousand. “The forecast indications are shown higher because of current situation. The number of employed people and applicants was reduced this year as against the indications of first quarter of 2008. The unemployment rate was not increased so intensively like in Turkey, Spain and other countries.

Khalafov said 1200 job places were cut within the two months this year in Azerbaijan. The official said it was not related with the economic crisis. “The job cuts were in this level last year too. It was always so. The job places are cut and opened. Totally more than 3000 people lost their job places in Azerbaijan last year”.
