Baku. Viktoria Dementieva – APA. U.S. Ambassador Anne E. Derse, together with U.S. Department of Defense and Government of Azerbaijan officials, today broke ground on state-of-the-art disease-monitoring facilities in Imishli and Sabirabad, the U.S. embassy in Azerbaijan told APA. The facilities are being constructed within the framework of bilateral cooperation supported by the U.S. Department of Defense Biological Threat Reduction Program (BTRP). Through the Department of Defense program, the United States partners with the Governments of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine to develop a network of disease surveillance and diagnostic laboratories at the national, regional, and district levels. Eventually, these national networks will link with other partner systems to enhance disease monitoring, reporting, and containment and ensure early warning of disease outbreaks which could potentially harm the local population and harm the agricultural economy. The labs will dramatically enhance Azerbaijan’s capacity to respond to infectious disease outbreaks.
