Caucasian Muslims Boardâ€™s archive brought from Tbilisi to Azerbaijan

Ramil Mammadli â€“ APA. â€œOn the initiative of Sheikh-ul-Islam Allahshukur Pashazadeh, the archive documents of the Caucasian Muslims Board were brought from Tbilisi to Bakuâ€, head of the Caucasian Muslims Boardâ€™s archive, doctor of history Anar Isgandarli told APA. He said they have begun the work on bringing the documents dated back to 1823-1918 to Azerbaijan two years ago. â€œThe 4000-page archive has already been brought to Baku, but it is difficult to bring all original documents. We are working on it nowâ€.

Isgandarli said officials of the Caucasian Muslims Board have been periodically sent to Tbilisi to work in the Georgian Central State Archive. â€œWe know about the presence of the Caucasian Muslims Boardâ€™s documents in that archive. The Sheikh-ul-Islamâ€™s personal relations have important role and the work is successfully continuingâ€.

The office of Sheikh-ul-Islam was founded in 1823 in Tbilisi to lead the Caucasian Shiahs in tsarist Russia. Nine years later â€“ in 1832, the office of mufti was founded in Tbilisi to lead the Caucasian Sunnis. The Shiahs and Sunnisâ€™ ecclesiastic offices were established on April 5, 1872 by the Russian tsarâ€™s order. The offices were functioning until February, 1917. 12 Sheikh-ul-Islams and 11 Muftis have been appointed since 1823 until now.
