In the areas surrounding Baku, in order to improve railway transport infrastructure, it is planned to restore the Yeni Surakhani–Hovsan, Bakikhanov–Bina–Gala, and Zabrat–Mashtagha–Baghlar railway lines, as well as to renovate existing stations along these lines and construct new stations, Anar Rzayev, Chairman of the Azerbaijan Land Transport Agency (AYNA), said at a roundtable dedicated to the implementation of the State Program over the past year, APA-Economics reports.
“In 2025, an analysis of the road infrastructure along the mentioned railway lines was conducted, and design work was launched. Some of the design work has already been completed.
In addition, optimization work was carried out regarding stations and stops along the lines to be restored, and the locations of the stations were determined,” Anar Rzayev noted.
According to him, one of the key routes ensuring mobility for people in the cities of Baku and Sumgayit, and across the Absheron Peninsula as a whole, is the Absheron circular railway route. This route consists of two lines: Baku–Khirdalan–Sumgayit and Baku–Pirshaghi–Sumgayit. In recent years, significant work has been carried out to modernize the route and increase the number of trips. In order to improve the quality of railway services, digitalization measures have been implemented, ticket sales have been organized online, a mobile application has been launched, and modernization works have been carried out at stations and stops.
As a result, the number of passengers on the Absheron circular railway has increased from 36,000 to 43,000 on weekdays. This indicates improved service quality and passengers’ preference for safe, comfortable, and barrier-free travel by train.
“Work has also begun on improving the Baku–Khirdalan–Sumgayit line, increasing train dispatch capacity and passenger-carrying capability, and putting new stops into operation. Currently, construction of the Darnagul stop is progressing rapidly in order to further enhance passenger transport services along this line. Around 60% of the construction work has already been completed. It is also planned to provide a stop at Bash Keshla station and to establish the Bineqadi stop,” Anar Rzayev emphasized.
He added that it is planned to modernize the Baku–Pirshaghi–Sumgayit line as well, increasing train dispatch and passenger-carrying capacity in this direction and putting new stops into service. It is planned to establish railway stops in the settlements of Kurdakhani, Fatmayi, and Saray along this line. Within the framework of these works, it is also planned to provide train stops at Narimanov station.
“One of the issues arising from the State Program is the restoration of the Guzdek–Garadagh line. After this railway line is restored, it is planned to increase the number of passenger trains on the Baku–Khirdalan–Sumgayit railway line, mainly due to freight trains moving along this direction,” Anar Rzayev stated.
