Currently, agriculture accounts for approximately 5–6% of Azerbaijan’s GDP, Agriculture Minister Majnun Mammadov said during a panel discussion at the conference titled “Modern Agricultural Cooperation as the Foundation of Sustainable Development and Guarantee of Food Security” held in Baku, APA-Economics reports.

The minister noted that more than 25% of employment falls within the agricultural sector.

“In this regard, we understand that agriculture plays both an important economic and a very significant social role. That is why we must approach the development and shaping of the policy we implement for the development of agriculture in Azerbaijan from this perspective.

There are particularly climate-related challenges in the sector. In addition, the security issues currently observed in the region, the Gulf region and Ukraine are also creating new challenges.

As for the issue of water scarcity, my personal view is that Azerbaijan does not face a water scarcity problem, although we receive 70% of our water resources from abroad. The problem is more related to management,” he said.

According to him, various steps are currently being taken to address this issue.

“First of all, work is being carried out on the creation of water reservoirs and the establishment of water collection systems. Regardless of whether they are small, medium, or large-scale, the government is currently implementing extensive projects across the country.

The second important issue for proper water management is the transition from transporting water through open canals, especially earthen canals, to concrete canals and even closed systems, particularly through pipelines,” the minister added.
