This year, reconstruction of the Sarsang Reservoir will begin, Ilham Guliyev, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Regional Water Reclamation Service under the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency (ADSEA), said during a media tour to the Karabakh Economic Region organized by the agency on the occasion of June 5 – Water Management and Reclamation Workers' Day, APA-Economics reports.
He noted that the reservoir has a capacity of 560 million cubic meters:
“The useful capacity of the reservoir is 500 million cubic meters. There is a 50-megawatt hydroelectric power plant fed by the Sarsang Reservoir. Twenty kilometers below the reservoir, there is the Sugovushan Reservoir for regulating water.
At the same time, in 2022–2023, major repairs were carried out on the Sugovushan Reservoir and the left-bank and main canals of the Tartar River. The remaining right-bank canal will also undergo major repairs after mine clearance is completed.
The Sarsang Reservoir is of great importance. It provides irrigation for nearly 100,000 hectares of agricultural land in six of our districts. This is of great significance. During the occupation, Armenian separatists closed the reservoir. They prevented water from flowing to downstream areas when it was needed, but released the water when it was not needed so that our citizens would suffer damage.”
He noted that the reservoir dam is 125 meters high, 555 meters long, and 12 meters wide at the top:
“The water depth here is 103 meters. The water level according to the Baltic system is 528 meters.
Currently, approximately 320 million cubic meters of water have been accumulated in the Sarsang Reservoir, and water accumulation is continuing.”
“All the work carried out here is being implemented at the expense of the Azerbaijani state,” he added.
