Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) operated a total of 224 flights on the Baku–Nakhchivan–Baku route between June 1 and 16, 2026, ensuring the safe transportation of more than 47,000 passengers, AZAL's Press Service told APA-Economics.

According to the airline, the number of daily flights on the route reached 25 during the period, marking one of the highest figures recorded in recent years.

The Baku–Nakhchivan–Baku route remains one of the country's busiest air travel destinations in terms of passenger demand. Despite the large number of daily flights, tickets are often sold out quickly due to consistently high demand, leaving few or no available seats for upcoming departures.

Given the strong demand, passengers who do not purchase tickets in advance may face difficulties obtaining seats for the next available flight upon arrival at the airport. AZAL therefore recommends that passengers plan their trips in advance, purchase tickets early and regularly follow flight updates.

The airline also noted that the geographical location and mountainous terrain of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic can directly affect flight operations. During the reporting period, unstable weather conditions around Nakhchivan Airport, particularly lightning activity and related meteorological risks, affected the safe operation of flights. As a result, some aircraft operating on the route were forced to return to Heydar Aliyev International Airport.

In cases of cancellations or delays, passengers were provided with alternative flight options in accordance with international aviation regulations and the airline's internal procedures. Necessary assistance related to ticket changes and other services was also provided.

AZAL emphasized that strong winds, sudden wind shifts, lightning activity and other severe weather phenomena may require route adjustments, extend flight times and lead to operational restrictions. Reduced visibility and high turbulence are also among the key factors affecting flight safety.

As safety remains the top priority in aviation, delaying or canceling flights due to adverse weather conditions is considered a necessary measure in line with international aviation standards. Accordingly, all decisions at AZAL are made with the safety of passengers and crew as the primary consideration.
