As part of efforts to enhance passenger transportation in Baku and reduce congestion in the city center, Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (ADY), an AZCON Holding company, launched all-new Darnagul railway stop on May 8, 2026, APA-Economics reports.

The project was implemented within the framework of the “State Program on the Improvement of Transport Infrastructure in Baku and Surrounding Areas for 2025–2030,” adopted under the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The Darnagul stop, built along the Baku–Khirdalan–Sumgayit line within the Absheron circular railway, has been designed in line with modern infrastructure standards, including inclusivity solutions to ensure maximum passenger safety and comfort. The station complex comprises two turnstile buildings with waiting halls, four platforms, a pedestrian overpass, and newly developed landscaping and green areas. To effectively manage the passenger, 11 turnstiles were installed in the Baku-bound hall and 10 in the Sumgayit-bound hall, including specially designed wide-access turnstiles for persons with disabilities and parents with strollers. The new stop also features car and bicycle parking facilities in the Sumgayit direction.

The ticket price for the Baku–Darnagul, Darnagul–Bilajari, and Darnagul–Khirdalan routes will be AZN 0.60 (USD 0.35), while the Darnagul–Sumgayit route will cost AZN 1.00 (USD 0.58).

The travel time between the Baku Railway Station and the Darnagul stop will be 10 minutes, while the trains will complete the journeys from the Darnagul stop to Bilajari and Khirdalan stations in 8 and 15 minutes, respectively.

Integrated transfer opportunities at the Darnagul stop will help reduce congestion in central Baku, particularly around the Baku Railway Station and “28 May” metro station, while improving overall urban mobility. Passengers traveling toward the microrayons, the Yasamal District, as well as the “Inshaatchilar” and “20 Yanvar” metro stations will easily shift to multimodal journey via the nearby Darnagul metro station and bus routes without entering the city center.

During the initial phase, the station is expected to serve 200,000 passengers annually, with a room for 500,000 by 2030 following the launch of new trains.

With the commissioning of the Darnagul stop, currently 15 stations and stops facilitate rail transportation on the Absheron circular railway route. This strategic project will provide fast and comfortable transport access for residents and employees in the Darnagul area while contributing to the further improvement of Baku's overall transport mobility.

In recent years, ADY has significantly enhanced the Absheron circular route, including further diversification of services. The efforts to improve railway service quality spans digital solutions such as online ticket sales and the “ADY Mobile” application, alongside the modernization of the stations and stops . As a result, the number of daily train journeys on the Absheron circular railway route increased from 66 to 96.

The State Program also envisages the restoration of the traditional suburban lines such as the Yeni Surakhani–Hovsan, Bakikhanov–Bina–Gala, and Zabrat–Mashtaga–Baghlar by ADY, alongside the reconstruction of existing stations and construction of new stops to further improve suburban railway infrastructure. In addition, the commissioning of the Bash Kashla, Guzdak, and Binagadi stations on the Baku–Khirdalan–Sumgayit line, as well as the construction of the Kurdakhani, Fatmayi, and Saray railway stops and the introduction of train stops at N.Narimanov station are planned. ADY has completed relevant infrastructure assessments on these projects, and design works are currently underway.

With the planned addition of new stations and stops, the number of stations along the Absheron circular railway route is expected to increase to 40 by 2030.

Another key objective of the State Program is the restoration of the Guzdak–Garadagh railway line, which will take in freight traffic, allowing the Baku–Khirdalan–Sumgayit route's wider involvement in passenger transportation.

In addition, the procurement of 20 new passenger trains is planned by 2030. Relevant works, assessments, and negotiations with international companies are currently ongoing.

These measures will support sustainable transport development and improve passenger mobility and accessibility across Baku and surrounding areas.
