He added that large quantities of NATO cargo will be transported via Azerbaijan to Afghanistan if negotiations on Poti-Baku-Aktau route are fruitful.
“Today, the first shipment of cargo is in Azerbaijan and will be shipped by ferry to Aktau (Kazakhstan) and onto Afghanistan. The TRACECA corridor is awaiting large quantities of NATO shipments,” he added.
In his words, ADDY and Azerbaijan’s Caspian Shipping Company are capable of transporting the cargo via Azerbaijan.
Baku-Boyuk Kesik railway will be upgraded because of an increase in cargo flow, he added.
Poti-Baku-Aktau container train project was first suggested in 2005. The first container train from Europe reached Georgia’s Black Sea Port of Poti, onto Baku through an existing railroad, and was taken to Kazakhstan’s Caspian Port of Aktau from Baku by ferry in 2006.
The project was then abandoned through lack of cargo.
