NATO to ship supplies to Afghanistan via Azerbaijan

He added that large quantities of NATO cargo will be transported via Azerbaijan to Afghanistan if negotiations on Poti-Baku-Aktau route are fruitful.
â€œToday, the first shipment of cargo is in Azerbaijan and will be shipped by ferry to Aktau (Kazakhstan) and onto Afghanistan. The TRACECA corridor is awaiting large quantities of NATO shipments,â€ he added.
In his words, ADDY and Azerbaijanâ€™s Caspian Shipping Company are capable of transporting the cargo via Azerbaijan.
Baku-Boyuk Kesik railway will be upgraded because of an increase in cargo flow, he added.
Poti-Baku-Aktau container train project was first suggested in 2005. The first container train from Europe reached Georgiaâ€™s Black Sea Port of Poti, onto Baku through an existing railroad, and was taken to Kazakhstanâ€™s Caspian Port of Aktau from Baku by ferry in 2006.
The project was then abandoned through lack of cargo.
