The Polo beat its fellow short-listers, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the Toyota Prius, to the title, and gave Volkswagen its second WCOTY title in two years, the Golf having won in 2009. Volkswagen Group also won the inaugural award back in 2005 with the Audi A6.
The 59 jurors, spread around 25 countries across the world, were fulsome in their praise of the Polo: "Holding its own in the most competitive market segment, the all-new Polo MkV is one of VW’s star performers.
