Baku. Nijat Mustafayev – APA-Economics. GM will be launching 25 new models in its four remaining "core" brands (Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC).

The biggest news by far are the new Cadillacs. GM has been going back and forth for months now over its plans for its premium brand, and rumors have continued to swirl about whether or not the sub-CTS car now known as the ATS and the STS/DTS replacement now known as the XTS would ever exist. Today, the rumors have been put to rest and both cars not only exist, but were shown in near-production ready form. The pair is expected to debut together in the 2011 calendar year, likely as 2012 models.

Cadillac wasn’t the only brand with big news today. Buick had its fair share of announcements as well, including news on two coming crossovers and two cars. GM recently confirmed that a Saturn Vue-based plug-in hybrid crossover would be coming to the Buick lineup, and the company says even the non-hybrid version of this as-yet-unnamed CUV will get over 30 mpg highway.

Slotting below that Saturn-based crossover will be a new compact Buick CUV, reportedly based on GM’s Gamma architecture. The Gamma platform hasn’t been seen in the U.S. yet, but underpins cars worldwide including the Opel Corsa and Meriva and is also expected to underpin the Chevrolet Aveo replacement. The compact CUV to built on this platform will be FWD and likely will not offer an AWD option. Lassa tells us it will be small but tall, and seat four, but little else is known at this point.
