Innovation Day dedicated to piracy problems in Azerbaijan

Baku. Aynur Veliyeva - APA-Economics. Microsoft-Azerbaijan has today held an event dubbed as Innovation Day, creating a platform for discussing the problems of piracy and exploring how innovations affect the development of the country and society.


Teymur Akhundov, General Manager of Microsoft Azerbaijan, spoke about the importance of innovation for the country’s future.

Kamran Imanov, Chairman of the State Agency on Copyright, briefed the participants about the activities to combat piracy in the near future.

Elmir Velizadeh, Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technologies, described information and communication technology as the priority for Azerbaijan.

Vika Rentzepi, Microsoft’s Manager for Business Development in Central and Eastern Europe, talked about historical development of the software industry since the mid 80-ies to date.

In his speech, he highlighted the piracy as a large obstacle to the development of innovative economy.

According to her, the problem of piracy is a global, and it stifles the initiative of independent software developers worldwide.


Eldar Jahangirov, Microsoft-Azerbaijan’s Corporate Manager, said Azerbaijan ranked sixth for pirate software in Business Software Alliance (BSA) annual report by IDC (International Data Corporation) in 2008.

The forum was attended by government representatives, senior officers of local firms, IT specialists, innovative teachers and students.
