Lars Nyberg: Azercell is one of TeliaSonera’s largest and most important companies in Eurasia - <font color=red>FOTOSESSION</font>

Baku. Aynur Veliyeva - APA-Economics. A delegation of TeliaSonera (the major shareholder of Azercell Telecom) gave a press conference at Azercell’s office as part of a tour to Azerbaijan.

Lars Nyberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of TeliaSonera, Tero Kivisaari, President of TeliaSonera Eurasia, Halim Ates, Vice-president of TeliaSonera Eurasia, and Ali Agan, CEO of Azercell, were present in the press conference.

Lars Nyberg said Azercell in Azerbaijan and Kcell in Kazakhstan are TeliaSonera’s largest and most important companies in the Eurasian region.

According to him, TeliaSonera directs major investment to these two telcos although four new companies recently acquired in Eurasia.

He said that Azercell has an important place in the non-oil sector of Azerbaijan.

“For 2008, Azercell achieved good performance. The company managed to maintain competitiveness by making regular price cuts, introducing new technology and expanding coverage area,” he added.

He noted that Azerbaijan’s mobile service market is ready to for 3G technology and Azercell has yet to get a license from the authorities to introduce this technology in the country.

With regard to the impact of the crisis on the TeliaSonera, Lars Nyberg said the Group posted a record high profit for 2008.

“Nevertheless, the impact of the crisis will affect TeliaSonera’s business and investment” he added.

Established in 1996, Azercell has more than 3.5 million subscribers.
