Baku. Konul Kamilgizi – APA. “No investigation was carried out regarding the people with Armenian surnames detained during unrests in Sumgayit 26 years ago, they were immediately released as the injured party and some of them weren’t brought to responsibility,” First Deputy Prosecutor General Rustam Usubov said at the presentation ceremony of the book “Sumgayit, 1988. Crime and punishment” dedicated to the mass unrests in Sumgayit in February, 1988, APA reports.
Rustam Usubov noted that though 26 years have passed since Sumgayit unrests, Armenians are still trying to mislead the world community, international organizations regarding the nature of unrests: “They are trying to present Azerbaijani people as brutal and bloodthirsty people, Sumgayit events as genocide in the world by hiding the true nature of the events.”
Usubov said that examination of the criminal cases launched by Sumgayit City Prosecutor's Office on February 27 and investigated by the investigation group of former USSR Prosecutor's Office from March 1, 1988 revealed that the group didn’t investigate the case thoroughly and objectively, disclose the true nature of events, determine all perpetrators of the crimes and main organizers of these events weren’t brought to responsibility at all.
Thus, it is necessary to re-investigate the Sumgayit events: “For this purpose, under the order of Prosecutor General Zakir Garalov, a commission consisting of experts of Prosecutor's Office was established to study the criminal cases conducted by the investigation group of former USSR Prosecutor's Office and they were advised to reopened investigation into these cases. Under the decision of Prosecutor General dated March 19, 2010, investigation group consisting of experienced employees of Prosecutor General's Office, Ministry of National Security and Ministry of Internal Affairs were instructed to reopen investigation into five cases and conduct one proceeding under my supervision.
Rustam Usubov said as Armenian Grigorian Eduard Robertovich, who killed 6 Armenians, was sentenced three times in 1979, 1981 and 1982, served imprisonment of 9 years and 2 months, was recognized by Armenians – Marina and Karina Mejlumians, who underwent sexual violence by him, and their mother Roza Mejlumian, his supporters failed to free him of responsibility.
“According to the current investigation and archival documents, Armenian nationalist organizations and special service agencies tried much to free Eduard Grigorian from responsibility. It is not accidental that soon after having been sentenced for a long term, Eduard Grigorian was sent to Armenia to serve his imprisonment and was later released,” he said.
Rustam Usubov said irrespective of Armenians’ claims, the documents gathered during the initial and court investigation prove that Eduard Grigorian was the active participant of the Sumgayit unrests, Azerbaijan SSR Supreme Court passed a judgment on him on December 22, 1989. Operations are underway to determine Grigorian’s whereabouts.
