Azerbaijani footballer gives testimony at trial over reporter death's case

In his testimony as a witness, Javid Huseynov said Elshan Ismayilov is his cousin and he does not know the other accused.

“Elshan sent me a message and let me know what Rasim Aliyev had posted about me. I told him not to care about it. As I saw Elshan was very nervous, I gave Rasim’s phone number and talked to him. Then I told Eshan that the matter is over and let it go. But Elshan told me that Rasim cursed his mother and this is a personal issue.

I had no idea of what had happened between them. Then I learned that Rasim had been hospitalized, so I visited him. One day later, I heard he had died. I told Eshan to go to police and let them know everything. I did not anticipate that Rasim would die. Had I expected such an incident to happen, I would have taken Rasim to another hospital,” said the footballer.

The hearing will continue on Feb. 2.

On Aug.8, journalist Rasim Aliyev was beaten by a group of unknown persons and died in the hospital he had been admitted to with numerous bodily injuries. Due to the fact, Kenan Madatov, Jamal Mammadov, Samir Mustafayev, Elshan Ismayilov, Arif Aliyev, and football player Javid Huseynov were arrested. After a while, a separate criminal proceeding was launched against Javid Huseynov.

The football club "Gabala" issued a statement due to journalist Rasim Aliyev’s death. Mentioning the name of a football player Javid Huseynov in connection with this incident has caused deep regret. Despite the fact that Javid Huseynov is a very important player for the team "Gabala", he was removed from the core team until the situation is clear.

The club stated that the issue will be investigated fairly, transparently and objectively and all the perpetrators will be punished.
