Over 109.7 million manat worth of narcotics seized in six months in Azerbaijan

In the first six months of this year, under the organization of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan and with the participation of representatives of other relevant agencies, 2,269,742 wild narcotic plants weighing a total of 152 tons 391 kg were identified and destroyed over an area of 570 hectares, the Permanent Working Group of the State Commission for Combating Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking said in a statement, APA reports.

The total value of 4 tons 290 kg 046.798 grams of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances withdrawn from illegal circulation is estimated at 109,706,109 AZN.

A total of 2,838 people were held criminally responsible for illegal drug trafficking, of whom 2,745 were men and 93 were women. Among those prosecuted, 52 foreign nationals were found with 722 kg 214.275 grams of various types of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances and 198.217 grams of cannabis plants.

Law enforcement agencies detected 120 cases of smuggling narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances into the country; from these cases, a total of 1 ton 627 kg 670.598 grams of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances and 5,183 methadone tablets as well as 13,194 tablets of strong-acting substances were seized.

Overall, crimes detected were committed in 140 groups, with 1 ton 289 kg 131.353 grams of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances seized.

1,308 crimes were committed by previously convicted individuals, from whom 973 kg 750.99 grams of various narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances were confiscated.
