The bill on Defamation is expected to be adopted next year, said Ombudsperson Elmira Suleymanova at the conference “Development of the human rights in the Republic of Azerbaijan: achievements and prospects”. According to her, there is a great need for the adoption of bill on Defamation: “This bill has been already developed and submitted to the Azerbaijani Parliament. It was decided to include it in the agenda of the parliament in 2013 and recommended for adoption. The adoption of the bill is inevitable, because at present it is considered to launch criminal case for the insult of honor and dignity in Azerbaijani mass media. After the adoption of this law the journalists will not face criminal charges over the insult of honor and dignity, certain fines will be imposed on them. I support the adoption of the bill on Defamation. Protecting honor and dignity, business image, including respect to the freedom of speech and expression, creating favorable conditions for healthy and grounded critics, are the major tasks of every state that comprises democratic values,” she said.
