"During the occupation of Azerbaijan's territories, Garabagh and Eastern Zangezur, which are the regions with the purest and most beautiful nature of country, were destroyed by the Armenian military units and, according to estimates, were contaminated with about 1.5 million mines and explosives. This means, at a minimum, 480 tons of plastic mass contaminated with harmful substances, 12,600 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and other toxic gases released into the environment," said Chairman of the Board of Azerbaijan’s Mine Action Agency (ANAMA) Vugar Suleymanov during the scientific-practical conference held in Khankandi, APA reports.

He stated that the issue in liberated territories extends beyond just landmine contamination: "Areas, where fighting took place, must be thoroughly cleared. Clearance operations are conducted in every liberated territory."

V. Süleymanov also stated that a large number of trap mines have been discovered in Khankandi.

According to him, there is no military logic behind the mined areas: "Areas without any military significance, cemeteries, agricultural fields, ruined residential areas, orchards are seriously contaminated with mines."

The head of ANAMA mentioned that Armenia has submitted information several times regarding minefields, and this information has been processed: "We processed this data and found out that the validity of the information provided does not exceed 25%. This is a very low level. It only covers the former contact line."
