Head of State Commissionâ€™s working group: â€œDrug produced in Afghanistan are carried to Azerbaijanâ€™s occupied territories through Iran and then to Europeâ€

There are more than 26 000 drug users in Azerbaijan, Head of working group for the State Commission for Combating Drug Addiction and Illicit Drug Trafficking Araz Aliguliyev told APA. He noted that according to 2011 reports, there are 26 490 drug users in Azerbaijan. Illness of 20 000 of them was confirmed. 80% of 20 000 are the users of heavy drug. More than 70% of the registered drug users are people above 30. Five drug users were registered among the teenagers. More than 600 drug users are women. Aliguliyev said that the number of the registered drug users is incorrect and in fact it could exceed the official statistics.

He said there were representatives of all layers of the society among the drug users and their names can not be released, only the users themselves can do it.

Aliguliyev announced that 1 ton 549 kq various drugs were confiscated by Azerbaijani law-enforcement bodies last year as a result of identification of 2921 facts. 557 kq drugs were confiscated and 2636 facts were identified by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 606 kq drugs were confiscated and 606 facts were identified by Ministry of National Security, 227 kq drugs were confiscated and 138 facts were identified by State Customs Committee, 159 kq drugs were confiscated and 114 facts were identified by State Boarder Service. 359 kq marihuana, 919 kq hashish and 120 kq heroin were withdrawn from turnover. 917 criminal facts are related to sale, 1762 facts - to keeping and 111 â€“ to the planting of drug. 37 foreigners were detained and 158 kg drug was confiscated from them.

Aliguliyev also spoke about drug smuggling through Azerbaijan. He noted that the transit line through Azerbaijan is named â€œNorth Balkanâ€ route in the international arena: â€œIt is known all international organization that the drugs produced in Afghanistan are being carried to Azerbaijanâ€™s occupied territories through Iran and then to Europe. According to National Security Ministry the drugs are being planted in the occupied territories. Azerbaijanâ€™s law-enforcement bodies identified more than 130 routes of the â€œNorth Balkanâ€ line. Law-enforcement bodies are combating against these routes.â€
