Lawyers ask acquittal for persons accused of beating American journalist and British human rights defender

Baku. Shahriyar Alizadeh – APA. Yasamal district court continued hearing on the case of Adil Tagizadeh, Roman Hasanov, Vusal Gurbanov and Nazim Huseynov who are accused of beating US citizen Amanda Ericsson and UK citizen Silvia Davis. APA reports that Judge Elchin Gurbanov presided over the hearing. The defense addressed the hearing. The defendants’ lawyers asked the court to acquit the defendants. The defendants asked time to prepare for the last plea.

The hearing will continue on January 19.

UK citizen Silvia Davis and US citizen Amanda Ericsson were beaten in Vidadi street, Yasamal district of Baku at 00.20 on the night of June 15-16, 2011. Yasamal district police office launched criminal case on the fact on article 221.2.1 (hooliganism by a group of persons) of the Criminal Code. The investigation found out that it was committed by Adil Tagizadeh, Roman Hasanov, Vusal Gurbanov and Nazim Huseynov, they were detained.

Ericsson and Davis worked in Azerbaijan for the non-governmental organizations and organized trainings for the journalists and civil society activists. Ericsson is also working for The Washington Post and The New York Times.
