APA reports that the case concerns his arrest at Baku International Airport in October 2005 on the suspicion that he was carrying 30,000 undeclared US dollars as well as his ensuing pre-trial detention.
He was subsequently also charged with a number of other serious offences, including embezzlement, tax evasion and smuggling of large quantities of petroleum. He was convicted in October 2007 on most counts and sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment.
He alleges that his arrest, detention and conviction were part of a persecution campaign against him and his family following the arrest of his brother, Farhad Aliyev, at the time Minister of Economic Development, on suspicion of organizing a coup d’état.
