Azerbaijani Prosecutor General’s Office comments on statement of Iranian Ayatollah regarding Rafig Tagi’s murder

Spokesman for Prosecutor General’s Office Eldar Sultanov told APA that the reports about the crime spread on mass media, including internet were being investigated.

Doctor of Emergency Station #8, writer, publicist Rafig Tagi was stabbed by an unidentified person on the way home at 22.00 on November 19. Rafig Tagi was treated in the Clinic Medical Center for several days, he died at hospital on November 23. Criminal case was launched on the fact on article 126.1 (deliberate infliction of serious bodily harm) of the Criminal Code, after the death of Rafig Tagi criminal case was launched on article 120.1 (premeditated murder). On November 26, Prosecutor General and Interior Minister listened to the report of the investigation group, necessary extra measures were determined for detaining all the participants of the crime, concrete instructions and recommendations were given. The measures taken with regard to the prosecution of crime are under the special control of the President of Azerbaijan Republic.

Son of Iran’s deceased Ayatollah Fazel Lankarani, Akhund Mohammad Javad Lankarani, functioning in Qom city, said that the murder of Azerbaijani writer and journalist Rafig Tagi was rightful.
Lankarani said that the Muslims will not allow the realization of insidious plans against Islamic values: “Thank God, his revenge hand appeared in Muslims and sent the villain, who insulted Islam and its Prophet, to the hell. The murderer, who killed him, gladdened Muslims and will receive great gift near God because he fulfilled an order of God”.
Lankarani congratulated Azerbaijani people on Tagi’s murder and commemorated his father Fazel Lankarani, who issued fatwa on Tagi’s murder.

In 2006, Ayatollah Fazel Lankarani issued fatwa on murder of Rafig Tagi because he insulted Islam in his article named “Europe and us”. Lankarani died in 2007. Tagi was knifed after his article “Iran and the Inevitability of Globalization” on November 19 and died at the hospital on November 23.
