Chairman of Islamic Party of Azerbaijan makes last plea

Baku. Shahriyar Alizadeh â€“ APA. Baku Court of Grave Crimes continued hearing on the case of chairman of the Islamic Party of Azerbaijan Haji Movsum Samadov, deputy chairman of the party Vagif Abdullayev, chairman of the partyâ€™s Astara region organization Rufulla Akhundzadeh, Movsum Samadovâ€™s brother-in-law Firdovsi Mammadrzayev, his relative Deyanet Samadov, member of the party Zulfugar Mikayilov and Faramiz Abbasov.

APA reports that the defendants - Movsum Samadov, Vagif Abdullayev and Faramiz Abbasov made the last plea. Haji Movsum Samadov said that false accusations had been brought against them. He said the Islamic Party of Azerbaijan always served the interests of the state. Samadov said he had nothing to do with terrorism.

Vagif Abdullayev did not agree to the accusations, either.

Faramiz Abbasov admitted that he had objected to the hijab ban in Azerbaijan. He said he had nothing to do with terrorism, always struggled for justice.

The hearing will continue in the second half of the day.

An incident occurred today as the relatives of the defendants entered the court room. The persons, who gathered outside the court, were made to leave the territory by the police. Some were detained, as they objected to the measures taken by the police. The defendants protested against it in the court. Judge Eldar Ismayilov said he did not know what happened outside and gave instructions to offer opportunities to the defendantsâ€™ relatives to enter the court room.

After that they were allowed to enter the court room.

The defendants were detained on January 7. They faced charges under articles 28, 214.2.1 (preparation for terrorist attack by a group of persons, organized group or criminal organization), 28, 214.2.3 (preparation for terrorist attack using firearms), 228.3 (illegal purchase, transfer, selling, storage, transportation or carrying of fire-arms, accessories to it, supplies (except for the smooth-bore hunting weapon and ammunition to it), explosives), 278 (violent seizure of power or violent retention of power) of the Criminal Code.
