Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations issues report on beach season

APA reports quoting the ministry’s website that according to the report, as a result of the activity of the State Water Rescue Service, the number of the water accidents reduced in the summer beach season in 2011. This year 310 people, including 296 from June 1 till September 15 were saved from drowning.

The preparations for the summer beach season are improved year after year. The service has been provided with modern equipment, this offers opportunities to organize these activities much better.

The analyses made by the employees of the Service show that the great majority of the accidents happened due to the lack of information, negligence, swimming in the banned places, inability to swim, drunken swimming, ignorance of elementary rules of behavior in water. Of 54 accidents (including 46 in summer) 46 facts of drowning happened in the places where swimming was banned. 16 of them died in non-beach areas, 15 in water channels, 10 in rivers, 4 in lakes, 1 in the water reservoir. 15 of them died due to
the inability to swim, 6 due to drunken swimming.

As a result of the activities, the number of the facts of drowning reduced in the country in 2011 summer beach season, 93 were drowned in 2010, while 54 in 2011.

The relevant departments of the Service are making analyses of the initial results of the current year. The achieved results will be used in the prophylactic measures that will be taken to ensure safety of citizens next year.
