"One of the main elements that unite Azerbaijan and Ukraine is loyalty to the principle of territorial integrity," Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, who is on a visit to Azerbaijan, told Vesti.az.

According to Yushchenko, the inviolability of the territorial integrity of the state is the basis of the modern international security system, this is the number one point of the international security concept.

“Because territorial claims are the beginning of any conflict. Everything else can be resolved through diplomacy,” the former President of Ukraine emphasized.

He said that the experience of Azerbaijan and Ukraine is important not only for the two countries, but also for the international community. So, this is a matter of observing the principle of inviolability of borders after the Second World War.

"Therefore, I believe that both Azerbaijan and Ukraine are teaching all nations a lesson from the highest security organization in the world - the UN. The lesson is that the borders that emerged after the Second World War are inviolable. This is the history of modern security. In Azerbaijan, this issue has been resolved, and in Ukraine it is in the final stages," Yushchenko emphasized.

According to the former President of Ukraine, the current war could have been prevented at the NATO summit in 2008.

"Ukraine and Georgia were not accepted as NATO members at the Bucharest summit. This was what Putin wanted most - for us to be rejected by the Western world," Yushchenko said.

Yushchenko also linked the 2008 war in Georgia to this.

The former President called the non-acceptance of Georgia and Ukraine as NATO members a serious political mistake.
