U.S. Embassy issues message to its citizens on elections

Baku. Victoria Dementyeva – APA. The U.S. Embassy has issued a message on security alert to its citizens, APA reports quoting the website of the Embassy. The message says: “In light of the October 9, 2013 presidential election in Azerbaijan, U.S. citizens in Azerbaijan should be mindful of potential demonstrations during the voting period on October 9 and after the election results are announced.

Initial results will be announced soon after polling stations close on October 9 and official results will be announced no later than October 23. Although the U.S. Embassy does not anticipate major disturbances, U.S. citizens should nonetheless remain constantly aware of their surroundings and be cognizant about their personal security during and after the election period. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.

You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.”
