Baku – APA. As a part of his visit to New York to attend the 68th session of the UN General Assembly, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov attended the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting on the situation in the Middle East dedicated to Syria, the Ministry’s press service told APA.
Commenting on the adoption of the UN resolution #2118 (2013) on Syria, Elmar Mammadyarov said Azerbaijan welcomes the adoption of this resolution and hopes that the UN Security Council’s unanimous and firm position would contribute to finding a political solution to the Syrian conflict, putting an end to the sufferings of the Syrian people and ensuring the fulfillment of the obligations by both sides in accordance with the international law.
Elmar Mammadyarov expressed his gratitude to the members of the UN mission for investigating allegations on the use of chemical weapons in Syria and said that Azerbaijan condemns use of chemical weapons and killing of civilians in Syria. According to Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, the adopted resolution confirms that the use of chemical weapons is a serious violation of the international law and considers it a threat to the international peace and security.
He noted that Azerbaijan welcomes the understanding reached earlier by Russian Federation and United States on the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons and today’s decisions made by the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in this regard. He said that the strong support in the UN resolution for Syria's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Syria is of great importance.
Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said Azerbaijan supports and co-authors the UN resolution #2118 (2013).
