Baku. Victoria Dementyeva – APA. “The decision to participate in the Eastern Partnership summit will be passed at the highest level. The participation may be at the highest level, at the same time at a lower level,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov while commenting on the invitation of the European Union to Azerbaijan to participate in the Eastern Partnership summit, APA reports.
The deputy minister noted that the program from the beginning had vague geographical boundaries: “We consider that our relations with the EU should not be based on some common regional approach. I think that the Eastern Partnership has a very vague and officially unformed geographic, political and economic framework. It is not right that we are chosen simply as one of the republics established in the territory of the former Soviet Union. In this group, there are states with various opportunities, resources, starting points and purposes. So, it was not a correct decision to include us in common frames.”
Araz Azimov said Baku expected EU to demonstrate more grounded position as a partner of Azerbaijan. As an example of such a grounded and successful process, he showed Memorandum on strategic partnership in the field of energy signed between Azerbaijan and EU.
“The practice in one sphere could have been spread to broader sphere including economy, transit, transport, culture, information space. Within more than 20 years of independence Azerbaijan has never taken an inconsiderate step, nor carried out any activity within common political fashion. We have always taken steps considering what concrete effect we will achieve,” he said.
