People's emotions are understandable, but I want to point out that Russia's attention to this issue is not related with the national identity of the person suspected of committing the crime, but with the agiotage around it. Some media reports may have shortcomings from a legal point of view, but I want to assure you that the anti-Azerbaijani campaign has never been, isn’t being and won’t be conducted in Russia,” Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Azerbaijan Vladimir Dorokhin told journalists, APA reports.
He said that Russia values the relations with Azerbaijan:
“Regardless of the court decision, we will do our best that this episode will not affect the relations between our countries, our pleasant feelings to Azerbaijanis, who are working in Russia and are doing great and important work for our country.”
The ambassador noted that all the procedural rights of the detained Orkhan Zeynalov have been provided – he has been provided with a lawyer and translator: “I’m sure that in accordance with the valid agreements and documents between the two countries, representatives of the Azerbaijani embassy will be allowed meeting with the detained person soon.”
The Russian diplomat also commented on the conditions in which Zeynalov was detained: “Of course, these videos are unpleasant. However, you should understand that the question is about the detention of the person, who is suspected of committing a grave crime. He could be armed, it was impossible to be aware of his behavior in advance and the operation was conducted by special-purpose forces. In such situations, special-purpose forces in all countries act like that. But in pre-trial investigation, the detained person and his lawyer have the right to complain about the extreme and wrong behavior of police.”
At the end, the ambassador urged everyone to prevent the spread of nationalist tendencies in Russia and Azerbaijan.
