Within the framework of Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the UN Security Council, member states’ ambassadors visited the Great Lakes Region of Africa, APA reports quoting Reuters. The UN Security Council members visited Congo, including Goma city of Rwanda and 3 camps inhabited by 16,000 IDPs in the residential settlement of the area named Mukunda.
Addressing the press conference in Goma, Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the United Nations Agshin Mehdiyev said the international will further continue supporting Congo. However, he noted that the Congolese people also bear responsibility to protect their territory.
The Eastern Congo has facing conflict over the years. The roots of the conflict lie in the genocide committed in Rwanda, where Hutus, the ethnic majority in Rwanda, killed about 800,000 Tutsis.
