“Moving too fast may harm the peace process,” said Areg Kochinyan, coordinator of the “Peace Bridge” initiative and President of the Armenian Council, at a press conference held on the meeting of experts from Azerbaijani and Armenian civil societies within the framework of the initiative, APA reports.
“There is a very large history filled with conflicts, crimes, and tragedies. In such conditions, moving too quickly may even damage the process.
On the other hand, we understand that neither geopolitical processes nor the region will wait for us. Especially in such an unstable world — there is war in the north, war in the south, war in the west, and there is a possibility of war in the east in the near future.
This situation creates something like a ‘ring of fire’ around our region and at the same time generates a serious need for stability in the region. For example, it can be seen from images shared on the Flightradar24 platform that since flights are restricted in the northern and southern directions, many aircraft pass over the South Caucasus — because connections with the West still need to be maintained.
This creates a dynamic in which the normalization and peace process in the South Caucasus becomes even more important for the West — both for Europe and the United States. One of the reasons for the growing interest of the United States in our region is precisely this.
On the one hand, we must move sufficiently fast in order not to lose the existing geopolitical and domestic political momentum. On the other hand, we must not forget that one of the main principles of normalization is ‘do no harm.’ Excessive speed, however, may harm this process,” Kochinyan emphasized.
