The scandals in the European Union indicate that elements of corruption are deeply rooted in the recent past, and the activities of Josep Borrell, the EU’s former High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, should also be investigated, said Tural Ganjaliyev, a member of the Milli Majlis’ Committee on International and Inter-Parliamentary Relations, in his statement to APA.
Corruption scandals in the European Union
Tural Ganjaliyev noted that criminal cases have already been filed against former EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, former Secretary-General of the European External Action Service Stefano Sannino, and other former officials, and Federica Mogherini and Stefano Sannino have been detained: “Even the name of Josep Borrell is mentioned in these corruption scandals. This is not accidental, as Federica Mogherini was close to Josep Borrell, which is why the activities of Josep Borrell should also be investigated. Without recognizing the crimes and corruption elements they committed, they competed with each other in accusing others and giving lessons in democracy. Both before the Patriotic War, during the Patriotic War, and afterward, Josep Borrell and his team attracted attention by their hostile attitude towards Azerbaijan and by conducting an open campaign against our country. The exposure of the corrupt actions of the former leadership of the European Union once again shows that those who voiced claims about Azerbaijan have pursued a two-faced and hypocritical policy. It is precisely their entanglement in corruption that underlies the unsuccessful and ineffective policies they established regarding the South Caucasus.”
The MP emphasized that former European officials who acted unjustly towards Azerbaijan are being exposed, criminal cases are being initiated, and, albeit belatedly, justice is being served: “Therefore, we expect and are monitoring the continuation of scandals that will shake the European Union in the future.”
Corruption mechanisms in the European Parliament
Tural Ganjaliyev noted that one branch of the corruption mechanisms in the European Union leads directly to the European Parliament: “Even though individuals like Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament (EP), and Eva Kaili, former Vice-President of the European Parliament, were deeply involved in corruption themselves, they still had the audacity to give lessons in democracy to others. When we criticized them in the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan, we were exposing their Armenian-biased corruption mechanisms influenced by the Armenian lobby and trying to deter them from such actions. But justice prevails. We once again deeply understand that these individuals previously took positions outside the bounds of justice and were puppets in the hands of the Armenian lobby. Now, law enforcement agencies in Europe are conducting investigations regarding these individuals and are exposing their dark past to the entire world. We hope that the European Parliament will learn lessons from past mistakes. Unfortunately, a biased stance against Azerbaijan still persists in the European Parliament. Even though we have already achieved peace in the region and a positive discourse is forming between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the biased position in the European Parliament remains. By looking at its recent past, we hope the European Parliament will learn a lesson and change its policies toward Azerbaijan.”
