The role of US President Donald Trump was fundamental and became a turning point in the Armenia–Azerbaijan peace process, said Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Department for Foreign Policy Affairs of the Presidential Administration, at the Doha Forum held in Qatar, APA reports.
“For the past five years, Azerbaijan and Armenia have been working on a peace agenda. I participated in numerous meetings with my Armenian counterpart. Yes, sometimes the discussions were difficult, and there were issues on which we could not agree. But Azerbaijan took the initiative and put on the table a realistic draft peace agreement and five key principles for peace. With President Trump and his team entering the process, we understood that the United States was fully committed to the international peace agenda. And we needed the strong political weight and guarantees of the US to ensure that peace would be irreversible," Mr. Hajiyev added.
Hikmet Hajiyev noted that starting from February, Azerbaijan launched intensive contacts with the United States: "Washington began working in parallel with both Armenia and Azerbaijan. Later, all these processes converged and produced results. Before Washington, there was also a meeting in Abu Dhabi, which lasted more than five hours. There, we agreed on the main framework of the Washington process. President Trump’s fundamental role became a turning point in the Azerbaijan–Armenia peace process.”
