Pope Francis - Biography
Pope Francis (birth name Jorge Mario Bergoglio) was born on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. He was born into a family of Italian immigrants. In his youth, he studied chemical engineering but later turned to religious life, joining the Jesuit Order in 1958.
Over the years, Bergoglio held various religious positions: he served as bishop, cardinal, and archbishop of Buenos Aires. In March 2013, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, he was elected as the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church during the conclave. By choosing the name "Francis," he paid tribute to Saint Francis of Assisi, a symbol of humility and care for the poor. He is also notable as the first pope in the history of the Church to bear the name "Francis."
Pope Francis became known for his reformist stance, his deep concern for social justice and the underprivileged, his emphasis on interfaith dialogue, and his advocacy for climate action. He made simplicity and transparency key priorities within the Catholic Church.
