The US Presidential Administration demanded during trade negotiations with Canada that Ottawa raise tariffs to prevent Chinese goods from being transshipped through Canada to the United States.
US Permanent Representative to the UN Mike Waltz said this on Fox News.
“Our team said that if we give you most-favored-nation treatment on tariffs, we will give you a better deal than any other country we trade with. You cannot allow China to use Canada as a transshipment point to flood the United States with goods. Therefore, you, Canada, must raise tariffs on China,” he said.
Waltz added that Washington had made a similar demand of Mexico and that the Mexican authorities had agreed.
