Co-chairs of World Azerbaijanis’ Congress appeal to international organizations in connection with Lake Urmia

Co-chairs of World Azerbaijanis’ Congress Sabir Rustamkhanli and Firudin Pervizniya appealed to the international organizations in connection with Lake Urmia located in Western Azerbaijan province of Iran, press service of the World Azerbaijanis’ Congress told APA. The appeal says that Lake Urmia located between Tabriz and Urmia is about to dry out.
“According to Iranian media, the second saltiest lake of the world Urmia is about dry out because of various reasons. The level of the lake fell by 6 meters within the past 13 years. This causes serious damage to the region’s ecosystem. Fauna around the lake and on its islands faced danger. Experts consider that the lake will dry out in the nearest future, if nothing is done. As a result of it the territory will become a desert, sown area will be unfit for use. This means disaster for thousands of people of villages, settlements and cities located around the lake. 150ha area of the lake has already become desert,” the statement says.
The appeal called on the international community, organizations and World Greens Movement to take measures to prevent Lake Urmia from drying out.
