# 09 July 2008 09:22 (UTC +04:00)
The first official document belonged to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic found in archives was the Ministry’s temporary regulations registered as of this date. There were several proposals for the celebration of the Day of Diplomacy – days of signing treaty with Ottoman Empire, start of Versailles Conference, recognition of Azerbaijan’s independence by the Entente countries, but just July 9 was chosen for that. In 1919, while Azerbaijan making its first steps as an independent country, diplomatic missions of 16 foreign countries, including USA, Great Britain, France, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, Iran and Ukraine functioned in Baku. Now there are 40 foreign diplomatic missions in Azerbaijani capital. Azerbaijan’s diplomatic corpse abroad contains nearly 60 embassies, consulates general and permanent missions and nearly 700 diplomats are working there and at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well.
