“For this the littoral states should sign an agreement determining their jurisdiction in the concrete areas of the seabed. Convention on the Continental Shelf adopted in Geneva in 1958 also requires it.”
The Foreign Ministry considers that the Caspian seabed and surface should be delimitated basing on median line principle.
“Ashgabat considers that Absheron peninsula and Chilov island should not be taken into consideration while delimitating the Caspian sea between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.”
Turkmenistan Foreign Ministry states that they will be committed to the principle of appealing to the international arbitration under the certain circumstances.
The divergence between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan is connected with three oil and gas fields – Kapaz (Turkmenistan calls it Serdar), Azeri (Omar) and Chirag (Osman).
